Outcomes-First Content is a methodology for academic teams tired of creating content that goes nowhere. It’s all about making better decisions, earlier, so you don’t waste time, budget, or energy later.

It provides a step-by-step process for creating content that's strategically aligned with your goals — whether that's influencing policy, securing funding, or changing hearts and minds.

A quick overview of the Outcomes-First Content methodology’s four phases

Phase 1. Clarify — Get aligned on purpose, audience, and strategic fit

  • Step 1a: What difference are you hoping to make, and who's important to making that difference?

  • Step 1b: What feelings, beliefs, actions, and learning outcomes are important to making that difference?

  • Step 1c: Where, when, and how can you reach your audience?

  • Step 1d: And what’s practical for your team?

  • Step 1e: How might you know if this project helps make a difference?

Phase 2. Develop — Shape your content approach and test it before hitting record

  • 2a. Sketch your approach

  • 2b. Think in ecosystems

  • 2c. Pilot and refine

Phase 3: Make — Produce the content

Phase 4: Learn — Track success and improve

  • 4a. Measure what matters

  • 4b. Adapt, improve, repeat
